About This Place
The Cauldron, widely called Shotgun, is a current-driven dive in the channel between Gili Lawa Laut and Gili Lawa Darat. Its sequence gives the site its reputation: a reef slope leads into a bowl-like depression, then moving water compresses through a narrow pass and releases divers over the coral garden beyond.
The bowl can hold snappers, sweetlips, groupers and macro subjects. The channel concentrates schooling fish and may bring reef sharks, trevally or manta rays, while the shallower exit area is bright with hard coral. The experience changes sharply with tidal speed; on one window it is a controlled drift, on another it is inappropriate for the group.
Shotgun is not a ride to chase for its own sake. A correct dive uses tide knowledge, a negative or prompt entry, close formation and a tender tracking the team from start to finish.

What to Expect
The group descends on the entry slope and follows the terrain toward the bowl. This first section gives time to settle, check the current and look for smaller reef life.
At the narrowing, the flow can speed up quickly. Divers stay behind the guide, hold a stable body position and avoid spreading across the channel. The current then releases the group over a shallower coral garden often called China Shop.
Depth commonly remains within 5–30 metres. The exit is a drift ascent under a surface marker, with the tender already following bubbles and the planned line.
Crowds and Timing
The Cauldron has a limited safe entry window and a narrow route, so overlapping groups are a real quality and safety problem. Experienced operators coordinate timing or choose a different dive. Being first is less important than entering on a tide appropriate to the weakest diver.

How to Visit
The site is normally visited on northern Komodo liveaboards. A few long-range day boats also reach it, but a liveaboard has more flexibility to wait nearby for the correct tide. Ask how the operator evaluates current and diver experience; a fixed promise to dive Shotgun regardless of conditions is a warning sign.

Who This Suits
For Advanced divers with recent drift experience, reliable buoyancy, a controlled negative entry and comfort with fast water. It is unsuitable as an introductory current dive. Less experienced companions can dive a sheltered alternative around Gili Lawa.

Safety Notes
Rapid acceleration, separation and uncontrolled depth change are the principal risks. Every diver needs a computer and a delayed surface marker buoy, while the group needs one clear leader and a tender that tracks the dive.
Do not grab living coral or deliberately ride above another diver. If the flow is stronger than briefed, follow the guide's abort or alternate-route signal. The safest Cauldron dive is often the one postponed to another tide.
Photography Notes
An action camera or compact wide-angle rig is easier to control through the channel than a large setup. Photograph the bowl before the acceleration and the coral garden after it. During the Shotgun section, buoyancy, trim and separation awareness take priority over framing a shot.
Entrance Fee
This site is inside Komodo National Park. Statutory park, activity and vessel charges may apply and can be separate from the operator fare. Ask the operator to itemise the current charges before payment; conditions and permitted activities are confirmed through the park and operator process.

Why is it called The Cauldron?

How deep is the dive?

How strong is the current?
It ranges from manageable to extreme. Conditions must be checked at the site, and the dive should be delayed or replaced when the flow is wrong.
What certification is needed?
Advanced certification plus recent, controlled drift-diving experience is appropriate. Operators may require additional logged dives.
What marine life may appear?
Snappers, sweetlips, groupers and reef fish occupy the bowl and coral garden. Sharks, trevally or manta rays are possible in moving water.
Can beginners dive Shotgun?
It is not a beginner site. Northern Komodo offers sheltered reefs where less experienced divers can have a better and safer dive.
Can I visit from Labuan Bajo in one day?
Some specialist day boats can, but the long run leaves less flexibility. Liveaboards anchored near Gili Lawa are better placed to wait for the tide.
Is the Shotgun section mandatory?
No. The guide may use an alternate route or cancel the dive. Safety and the actual current decide the plan, not the itinerary label.

- SiOra is the park’s e-ticketing and SIMAKSI system. Reserve before travel; Ministry guidance recommends completing the reservation by H-1. An operator can assist, and self-service is available at the Komodo Visitor Center and KP3 terminal.
- Payment is cashless through the methods available in SiOra, including BRIVA or bank transfer and supported e-wallets. Keep the e-ticket and ensure the traveller details are correct.
- A 1,000-visitor daily quota has applied since 1 April 2026 to the main visitor islands and 23 dive sites. Availability therefore depends on the travel date and registered itinerary.
- The final SiOra total can include entrance, activity, vessel and special-use charges. Ask the handling operator for an itemised total before issuance.
- Official public guidance does not state one universal refund or rescheduling rule for every reservation. Confirm the current SiOra terms in writing before the ticket is issued, including treatment of weather disruption.
Statutory fees under Peraturan Pemerintah No. 36 Tahun 2024, in force since 30 October 2024. Verified 31 August 2026 against the official PP 36/2024 schedule, the Ministry of Forestry SiOra notice and the Ministry’s 2026 quota notice. Amounts are payable in rupiah; dollar figures are courtesy estimates converted at Rp 17,900 and rounded.
